Snow Polo in St. Moritz – A Truly Enchanting Experience

A magical occasion to be experienced once in a lifetime.

When you hear ‘Snow Polo’, you probably envision the traditional horseback game being played in the snow. Think again.

In January every year, 25,000 spectators gather in the charming snow-topped resort town of St. Moritz, Switzerland, for the Snow Polo World Cup, to watch the best international polo teams from across the world battle it out on a frozen lake.

That’s right – horses charging around on thick ice – 24 centimetres of it to be precise – and it’s quite the spectacle.

Powdered snow flies dramatically into the air as players swing their mallets with force, and despite the horseshoes being adapted to the ice, the tricky terrain requires an impressive extra level of skill and control, resulting in an exhilarating match, filled with extreme physicality to thrill the spectators!

As official partners of the event, Royal Salute hosted an opening ceremony at the stunning Hotel Steffani, where Royal Salute World Polo Ambassador, Malcolm Borwick, carried out a traditional Scottish Quaich Ceremony – the perfect aperitif to a delicious Swiss cheese fondue.

The following evening VIP guests were treated to a private dinner in world’s largest whisky bar in the historic Hotel Waldhaus, where Royal Salute Global Brand Ambassador, Nathan Wood, hosted a one-of-a-kind tasting featuring two exclusive whiskies from Royal Salute’s Cask Programme, a new ultra-exclusive range of 21 casks allowing bespoke personalisation.

For those courageous enough to brave St. Moritz’s freezing temperatures, ex-Great Britain polo captain, Malcolm Borwick, carried out a ‘Polo Clinic’ every morning – providing an exciting introduction to the game of snow polo, along with a hands-on demonstration of how to take a winning shot. Thankfully the clinic concluded with a delicious dram of Royal Salute on the ice to warm everybody up!

After experiencing temperatures of -15 degrees Celsius, it’s needless to say that guests welcomed a selection of delicious cocktails created with the Royal Salute Polo Estancia Edition, served in the cosy Royal Salute VIP lounge, decorated in the warm terracotta colours of an Argentinian estancia. Call me Tango – a bitter-sweet cocktail with a hint of freshness and Zingy Polo – a light and citrusy daytime cocktail were the serves of the day.

And, as if by serendipity, the Royal Salute lounge was located next to the delicious Sprüngli Swiss chocolate lounge, for the perfect pairing.

From exhilarating polo matches to spectacular mountainous views, to exquisite food and whisky – St Moritz truly is a magical place to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.
