When you hear ‘Snow Polo’, you probably envision the traditional horseback game being played in the snow. Think again.
In January every year, 25,000 spectators gather in the charming snow-topped resort town of St. Moritz, Switzerland, for the Snow Polo World Cup, to watch the best international polo teams from across the world battle it out on a frozen lake.
That’s right – horses charging around on thick ice – 24 centimetres of it to be precise – and it’s quite the spectacle.
Powdered snow flies dramatically into the air as players swing their mallets with force, and despite the horseshoes being adapted to the ice, the tricky terrain requires an impressive extra level of skill and control, resulting in an exhilarating match, filled with extreme physicality to thrill the spectators!
As official partners of the event, Royal Salute hosted an opening ceremony at the stunning Hotel Steffani, where Royal Salute World Polo Ambassador, Malcolm Borwick, carried out a traditional Scottish Quaich Ceremony – the perfect aperitif to a delicious Swiss cheese fondue.
